behive state wanderings

a sign just out of town. we felt at home.

so we did it. we went camping outside of zion national park. we got there around 9pm on thursday, and set up the tent in the dark without issue (barring that the ground was gravel, and the dirt below it was exceptionally hard), it was a little windy, but not unbearable. and the whole thing took less than an hour to get up, in, inflated, zipped up, and drowsy.

the fortress of solitude

the place we stayed was the zion river resort, in virgin, it was really an rv place that had less than 10 tent sites. but it had nice amenities, a pool/jacuzzi, decent store for necessities, nice bathrooms, laundry, and even the tent sites had electrical outlets. right next to the river, and all for about $30 a night.

i made breakfast both mornings on the barbeque we brought, nothing fancy, egg stuff. and then we used it to roast marshmallows friday night. not as pretty as a campfire but much more efficient to cook on and makes perfect marshmallows. friday was nice low stress, got up and went up to kolob reservoir, only didn't. we got almost all the way there and a 30' long bank of snow blocked our passage on the road. still, the drive was pretty and we did get out and walk around a bit. then it was back to camp for lunch/siesta then we went to one of the trails and walked along the river, and i collected bugs. (some of you know that i am taking a zoology course right now, and the instructor is an entomologist so we have to put together a 2o specemin bug collection) Found a really cool beetle called a "fiery searcher"beautiful iridescent thing. i'll put up pictures after the taxidermy is complete.

saturday we came back earlier than expected, by the time we tore down the campsite and got ready to go, had lunch, and realized that we had to go home in only 3 hours there was little sense in hanging around town. so we headed back leisurely, tried to see a movie a few times, and failed. but found another state run campsite near the virgin river that we may try in the future. the one mishap on the return trip was a leaky cup of mountain dew that filled the console of the car with soda. and you couldn't brake, because a wave of it would wash over the front and onto the floor. well, thats what happened-stupid inertia.

got home safely in the evening on saturday, had to work on sunday. and found out that i did not (as expected) have to work on monday morning. so i went with meg down to san diego to celebrate her parents birthdays(both in april). it was very nice, her mom made lamb chops that were really good. and as always, her apple pie is the only one i'll eat. we stayed the night and returned monday afternoon just in time for me to go to class.

it has been a busy few days, but it is nice to be back home.

That tent is bigger than our Manhattan apt!

Seems like poor city planning to put the Virgin Jail right next to the Wild Ass Saloon. That's just asking for trouble.

Of all the yellow liquids to be regrettably released in a car on a road trip, Mountain Dew is probably one of the better ones.

I honestly never know what you will do or where you will go next. Going to Utah...volunteering at a zoo... I get credit for being the more wily and unpredictable one, but, who could've ever predicted Utah? I would've guessed you'd go to India before Utah, or even Paris, Texas. You keep me on my toes, you unclassifiable weekend warrior, you.

Great pics! I really like the tent...roomy! I'm glad that you had a chance to get away for a few days. Looks like a great time!

flushing consoles are now on my to do list.

it actually is about as big as your old apartment (without the bathroom) plus we had the option for setting up dividers to make it a 3 room apt.
